Somebody Had To Be First

February 28, 1990: Smith became the first Sidekicks player to be credited with the "decision" (win or loss) who was not a Goalkeeper (as his natural position). Smith entered the game as an Emergency Goalkeeper. He lost the match 5-9 vs San Diego.

Draft Notice

Smith was left unprotected in the 1993 CISL Profesional Draft because he informed all member clubs that he would play nowhere but Dallas, and would retire if anyone else drafted him. La Raza de Monterrey, however, selected Smith anyway with their second round pick. After holding out for a short period of time, Smith agreed to play for La Raza provided he was traded at the end of the season back to the Dallas team he loved.

While La Raza agreed to the demand at the time, they failed to do so (unconfirmed reports stated that Monterrey was demanding David Doyle or Tatu in exchange for Smith in initial talks during the 1993 season), and Smith sat out a majority of the 1994 season in protest. He signed for the remainder of the season on August 16, 1994 on the condition that he be allowed to sign with Dallas after the season.

Smith retired in 1998 from profesional soccer. Smith serves as Director of Coaching for the Solar youth soccer club.
