van Der Beck was the first pro soccer player drafted out of High School. Then Rowdies and future Sidekicks coach Gordon Jago drafted van Der Beck in the 1978 NASL Draft.

Van Der Beck was Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Munity of Major League Soccer until the club was disbanded before the 2002 season.
