Signed as a Free Agent on September 11, 1984.
Ulrich won the Herman Award, college soccer's answer to the Heisman Trophy, in 1982. He was voted the Atlantic Coast Conference Sweeper of the Year in 1981. Duke University inducted Ulrich into their Hall of Fame in 1999.
Ulrich was the first round selection of the New York Arrows in the 1982 MISL Draft (the 12th selection overall).

Joe Ulrich was released on March 7, 1985 due to what then-Coach Gordon Jago called "a lack of playing time." He was working in New York state's computer industry in 1999 according to the Duke University Hall of Fame.
